If you are thinking about employing offenders or
ex-offenders, there are some key questions that need to be answered. Below are the answers to some of these questions.
Q: How can I find out if someone is suitable for working with my organisation?
A: The Criminal Records Bureau (CRB), an Executive Agency of the Home Office, provides wider access to criminal record information through its disclosure service for employers who need to conduct these checks because of the nature of their work. This service enables organisations in the public, private and voluntary sectors to make safer recruitment decisions by identifying candidates who may be unsuitable for certain work. Organisations wishing to use the service may be able to ask successful job applicants to apply for either an enhanced or standard disclosure.

Q: How do I find out what level of CRB check I need?
A: Standard checks are primarily available for anyone involved in working with children or vulnerable adults, but can also be provided for other professions including legal and financial sectors. Enhanced checks are available to anyone involved in regularly caring for, training, supervising or being in sole charge of children or vulnerable adults. It is also available for certain licensing purposes and judicial appointments.
Q: How long does a CRB check take?
A: The CRB aims to process 90 per cent of standard checks in 10 days and 90 per cent of enhanced checks in four weeks.
